FP McCann Completes Works at The Inner Walled City Public Realm

We’re making good progress on the city centre streetscape project! So far, we’ve completed and handed over:

• Bank Place (Phase A)
• Magazine Street (Phase C)

These sections are now fully open and operational and have been handed back to DfI Roads. This equates to 30% handed over!

What’s been done so far:

• High-Quality footways: Footways widened where possible, reconstructed and paved with heritage-style Caithness paving to match nearby streets.
• Improved drainage: Downspout gullies replaced, with channels added to carry roof runoff safely away from footpaths.
• High-Quality roads: Carriageways realigned, reconstructed and paved with durable dark grey granite setts, with all ironwork replaced.
• City Walls enhancement: The narrow strip along the walls has been rebuilt with a future-ready duct; half of the paving uses reclaimed setts from the project, the rest matched to the original.
• Signage and lighting: All new road markings, signage, and energy-efficient LED street lighting installed, keeping the heritage look.

Upcoming Works

The remaining works will continue until Summer 2026, mainly on:

• Society Street
• Magazine Street Lower
• Palace Street
• Union Hall Place
• Society Street Carpark

We’ll continue keeping local residents and business owners updated on progress, traffic management, and any changes as the project develops.

Other areas practically complete now:

• Magazine Street Upper: Footway and road works practically

complete.

• Magazine Street Lower: Footway works practically complete.

With these practically complete works, the project is now over

50% complete

The Big Bridge Event with Nazareth House Primary school and Fountain Primary School at St Augustine’s Church hall on the 2nd June 2025.

As part of the Projects Social Value, we have been working with the local Mencap office on Bishop’s street to provide certified training, employment and placement opportunities for people with a learning disability to gain transferable workplace skills and experience.
