PROJECT:
The £15 million design and development of the new Endoscopy Unit at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
The new two-storey modular building contains the Endoscopy Unit with five clinical rooms and an outpatient area on the ground floor and has a plant room on the first floor.
Working with main contractor Actiform and P+HS Architects, our brief was to supply and install 10 door-sets in total, including manual and automatic entrances that integrated seamlessly with the overall design vision for a modern, efficient and spacious clinical environment.
CHALLENGES:
The main challenges for this project were the five restricted structural openings and also seamlessly matching the designs of the manual and automatic doors.
SOLUTION:
Overall, we supplied and installed::

1 Doorson 300-E32A (single automatic door sliding over a wall)
And manufactured, supplied and installed door-sets from our own, multi-award-winning Flo-Motion® range:

2 Flo-Motion® F11 (single manual door sliding over a glazed screen)

3 Flo-Motion® F12 (single manual door sliding over a glazed screen)

4 Flo-Motion® E32O (single manual door sliding over a wall)
To achieve the maximum clear opening width on the five restricted openings, we installed F11 and F12 doors with a pull handle on the external side and a flush mounted finger pull on the room side. By doing this, on a structural opening width of 1900mm, we achieved a clear opening of 800mm.
To ensure seamless design integration across the automatic and manual doors, the same aluminium door profile used on all the Flo-Motion® doors was also employed on the Doorson automatic door.
OUTCOME:
Our Doorson and Flo-Motion® door-sets provide many significant benefits for patients, staff and visitors, including:
- Helping to create excellent light transfer for a feeling of spaciousness.
- Contributing to an attractive, efficient, effective and improved environment for all.
- Easy fingertip operation of our 9 Flo-Motion® doors, due to their average force test readings of only 8.34N.
