Mining Investigations

The Land Consultancy Limited has recently completed shallow mining site investigations in Newcastle, Burnley, Bolton, Wigan, Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham. The potential for a site to be affected by shallow coal (or other) workings is usually highlighted at the desk study and site walkover phase, following the study of geological and historical plans and a Coal Authority mining report. Mine abandonment plans are often obtained from the Coal Authority if the presence of shallow coal seams is suspected. As well as shallow workings, bell pits, mine shafts or adits may also be present on or adjacent to some sites. Mine entries may or may not have been treated; and, unrecorded entries may also be present which may only become apparent after construction works have started.
