Geotechnical site investigations are often undertaken simultaneously with Phase 2 contaminated land investigations and similar investigation techniques are generally employed.
In-situ testing (standard penetration testing) is typically undertaken at regular intervals within the exploratory holes as they are are formed on site and samples are obtained for subsequent laboratory geotechnical testing. In-situ shear vane and/or pocket penetrometer testing is also conducted on undisturbed samples of clay. The recovered soils/rock are logged to BS5930:1999 (amendment 2). In-situ CBR or plate load testing can also be undertaken within shallow trial pits for road pavement design purposes.
