A Marking Knife is often called a strikingknife used for the acurate marking of lines up against squares andrulers.

This marking knife has a steel blade which issharpened to a knife edge, but only on one side of the blade - theother side of the blade is kept straight so as to follow a ruler orstraight-edge.

The purpose of the knife edge is to sever thefibres in the wood as the marking knife is drawn over them. Thisproduces a very accurate line which aids in making accurate cutswith the saw or chisel's.
