Insulation features heavily in EST's energy saving tips

25-10-2013

Cavity wall, loft and solid wall insulation have all been named amongst the Energy Saving Trust's (EST) top ten tips for reducing power consumption and bills. The list, produced as part of Energy Saving Week 2013, states that cavity wall insulation can save families around £140 each year and the cost of installation can typically be recouped within four years or less. In terms of lofts, the EST recommends fitting at least 270mm of insulation and states it can offer savings in excess of £180 each year. However, it is solid wall insulation which offers the biggest savings. Many homes with solid walls qualify for the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme and savings can often come in at more than £400 per annum. Other recommendations made by the EST include getting a draught excluder, turning off lights and appliances when not in use, washing at 30 degrees, getting an efficient shower head, using heat controls and switching to LED lights.
