On this site in Vauxhall, London, we had the task of swapping out some telecoms equipment on the roof of a building. The height of the building was 21 metres, to reach the landing area on the roof we needed a crane with a main boom of 44.0 metres The problem was that the main rail line into Waterloo Station ran adjacent to the site and the crane centre of slew was only 20 metres from the rail track boundary. On behalf of our client we consulted Network Rail to seek permission to operate the crane in such close proximity to an operational rail line. A Risk Assessment and Method Statement along with detailed drawings were subsequently prepared and submitted to Network Rail for approval.
