What is the difference between kW and kVA ratings on generators?

kW (kilowatts) is the real usable (active) power the generator delivers. kVA (kilovolt-amps) is the apparent maximum load including both active and reactive components. Because generators have efficiency losses, kW is typically a portion (e.g. 0.8 power factor) of the kVA rating.
