Why lithium battery fires are becoming the biggest threat to UK waste recycling facilities

Why recycling centres are particularly vulnerable

Waste facilities process enormous volumes of mixed materials every day.

Hidden batteries frequently enter through household waste, commercial waste, construction waste, WEEE recycling, metal recycling and plastic recycling.

During handling, these batteries may be crushed, punctured, compacted or shredded.

Any of these actions can trigger thermal runaway.

A major waste fire can result in months of downtime, replacement of plant and machinery, environmental clean-up costs, higher insurance premiums, loss of contracts and regulatory investigations.
