The danger of non-regulated highway barriers

09-04-2026

Not all barriers are created equal, and relying on non-confirmatory TVCBs can introduce serious risk — not only to your projects, but to the safety of your people.

Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers (TVCBs) play a critical role in road safety, but only when they are properly designed, tested and installed as intended.

There is growing concern about non-compliant or inadequately tested barriers originally purchased for one purpose, such as use on construction sites, being deployed on roads and highways simply because they look like compliant TVCBs.

Without verified performance data and correct installation, TVCBs can lead to reduced effectiveness on impact, potential liability and programme delays, false confidence in performance, increased risk of failure and loss of life, and costly remediation and reputational damage.

Not all barriers on the market meet the same standards. If you need a barrier for a road scheme, always check compliance and ensure the system is supported by credible, confirmatory testing.

Just because barriers look similar doesn’t mean they are fit for purpose. Safety isn’t about placing barriers — it’s about knowing they will perform when it matters, protecting road users and workers.

Choose the right barrier for the right application, and use systems that provide proven performance and genuine peace of mind.
