As part of our National Apprenticeship Week celebrations, we spoke to Matthew Whistance about his apprenticeship at Elite Precast Concrete. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’m currently undertaking the Level 5 Mineral Products Technician apprenticeship, which I study alongside my full-time role as Operations Co-ordinator at Elite Precast Concrete.

“The apprenticeship is delivered through the University of Derby in conjunction with the Mineral Products Association, of which Elite is a member. The course combines structured academic learning with practical, work-based application.

“The qualification has given me a strong technical understanding of mineral products, with a particular focus on concrete technology, quality control, production processes, and compliance with British and European standards. On the academic side, I’ve developed my knowledge of mix design, material properties, testing methods, and how data from laboratory and site testing is interpreted to ensure product performance, durability and safety. The course has also strengthened my understanding of sustainability, health and safety management, and continuous improvement within manufacturing environments.”

Operational success for apprentice Matt

“The work-based element of the apprenticeship allows me to apply what I’m learning directly at Elite Precast Concrete. In my role, I support production planning, co-ordination of operations and problem-solving across departments. The apprenticeship has helped me better understand the technical impact of operational decisions, which means I can communicate more effectively with production teams, quality staff and management.

“I’m now more confident analysing issues, identifying root causes and contributing to improvements that enhance efficiency and product quality.

“I really enjoy working at Elite Precast Concrete. The company has been extremely supportive of my development and provides a fast-paced, hands-on environment where learning is encouraged. Being part of a precast business has allowed me to see the full product lifecycle — from design and manufacture through to delivery — which has greatly increased the value of my apprenticeship.”
