Reelin, a glycoprotein found in the matrix plays a role, in the proper migration and positioning of neurons during brain development. When there are mutations in the gene it can lead to organization of the cortex and cognitive difficulties. Cajal Retzius cells located in the zone of the developing cortex secrete reelin.
