Project details:
Euston Road forms part of London’s Inner Ring Road, is the northern boundary of the Congestion Charge zone and one of the capital’s heaviest trafficked routes. At its junction with Tottenham Court Road, Euston Road has an underpass that removes east-west traffic from street level, making the area a busy pedestrian crossover between commercial developments to the immediate north of Euston Road, and Warren Street underground station and University College Hospital to the south. Amongst a series of recent public realm improvements to the area is the creation of a small linear green space on a wedge-shaped parcel of land between the southern side of the underpass and Euston Road street level, where previously trees stood in a fully paved hardstanding. Planted borders and mown grass margins have been laid either side of a new resin-bound gravel path, and tree works undertaken, including crown lifting and root zone decompaction, designed to improve their long term health and sustainability. Seating has been provided alongside the paths to offer pedestrians the opportunity to rest and enjoy this green space in what is otherwise a very concrete-dominated local built environment. The contemporary styling and robust construction of Furnitubes’ RailRoad made it the ideal choice for the tough demands of this busy site. Three seating units were supplied in total - all from the ‘Loop’ family within the RailRoad range - comprising two simple straight benches and a combination assembly of a straight seat with backrest adjoined to a curved bench unit.
