Project details:
Cotton Field Wharf is the latest build-to-rent residential community from the Manchester Life Development Company, offering over 300 new rental apartments in three 7 and 8 storey building blocks. Located in the Ancoats / New Islington area and bounded by waterways on three of its four sides, the site is just a five minute walk from Manchester city centre. Low level buildings connect the main blocks, creating two outdoor spaces for the residents in the areas between, both with an attractive aspect overlooking New Islington Marina (itself a connecting waterway between the Rochdale and Ashton Canals). The gardens are at a slightly raised level compared with the adjacent public wharf, meaning a low level fence on top of a small retaining wall suffices for security purposes, with the benefit of maintaining views out over the waterway. New tree and shrub planting in the gardens provide a welcome contrast to the scale and hard materials of the built form.
Furnitubes’ Hollo range suited Cotton Field Wharf perfectly as the products can be used freestanding in these private spaces, allowing them to be moved around the garden by the residents, with the variable shapes and sizes useable as both seating and low table surfaces. In all, 25 units were supplied for the two spaces, including 500mm square versions at 350mm and 450mm heights and the longer 1000 x 500mm version at 450mm high. The steelwork was hot dip galvanised for long term corrosion resistance, with a polyester powder coated decorative finish in a grey colour to complement the surrounding brickwork and architectural metalwork; the iroko hardwood slats were supplied in a smooth planed finish without any treatment, so that they will weather to a natural silver-grey patina over time.
